About Dr Stathis Hadjidemetriou

Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Technologies
Director of the MSc in Computer Science and Business Technologies

EXPERTISE

My field of research is in image analysis and biomedical image analysis. The research on biomedical image analysis is for both MRI and biological microscopy. The methodology I develop is a combination of analytical approaches, statistical approaches, and deep learning.

SHORT BIO

Stathis Hadjidemetriou received a B.Eng (Honors) in Electrical Engineering from McGill University in Montreal and an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University in the City of New York. He received his Ph.D. in computer science also from Columbia University. His thesis was in the fields of image analysis and computer vision.

As post-doctoral fellow at Yale University and as research scientist at University hospitals he specialized in bio-medical image analysis, particularly for microscopy. He has worked on image analysis for microscopy in studies for cancer treatments. He has also worked on organ level biomedical MRI data. The latter for neurological conditions of the brain as well as for extending the use of quantitative MRI for the whole body such as for the detection of possible metastases.

The methodologies he has developed have been on the reconstruction and restoration of biomedical imaging data for artifacts such as shading, displacements, and motion. In microscopy the restoration for these artifacts is followed by segmentation and tracking of (sub)-cellular structures from spatiotemporal data. In brain MRI the processing has been for multi-contrast MRI data of the brain, torso, and even for the entire body. The eventual objectives in MRI have been the quantification of anatomy, the computation of atlases, and the segmentation of lesions.

His current research is on image analysis for these restoration and segmentation problems combined with techniques from artificial intelligence. The AI techniques he uses are mainly based on deep learning.

He is currently associate professor at the Department of Information Technologies at University of Limassol (formerly CIIM).  He has published numerous research papers in scientific journals and presented his work in numerous scientific conferences. He serves as reviewer for various international conferences and journals. He has extensive teaching experience in computer science, electrical engineering, and biomedical engineering.
